All about Tivat – A beautiful small coastal city/town in Montenegro – on Boka Bay. A happy and buzzing spot in summer and “the most happening invested area” on the Adriatic coast.
Tivat the Town
The main area of Tivat can be found on the waters edge. Lively coffee shops, upscale bars and restaurants, families walking the main Pine promenade, kids roller blading, exclusive boutiques and hotels, to name but a few…
Locals and tourists alike gathering for coffees, Rakijas and an Aperol before setting out for lunch or dinner. Standing proudly in the center of it all are the super yachts coming and going into the Port of Montenegro.
But that’s just the glitzy side of Tivat, there is also a side wrapped in culture, not to be forgotten. The fruit vendors with the freshest of local produce, the little shops a road just above the port with some really great finds and the restaurants dotted all around the town, offering great local dishes, make sure to end of the meal with a traditional rakija – one can never have to many of these in Montenegro, the locals will tell you it is a healer of all sorts.
The atmosphere is completed with street musicians playing to the tourists and the friendly lady selling popcorn on the waters edge. New and old, glitz and glam, rich and poor, modern and traditional – all rolled into one.
When to visit Tivat
A mixture of all cultures and people visit throughout the year to soak up the beauty Tivat and its Port of Montenegro has on offer.
Tivat is most popular during the summer months of June, July and August. In summer everything comes alive. Flavors, sunshine, laughter and just a whole lot of happy. A lot of swimming is done during this time as it can get really hot due to the humidity.
Enjoy milder weather from April to June and again from September and November. Still swimming days from April up until beginning/mid October. Great time to visit if you enjoy outdoor activities and mountain walks.
The winter weather sets in fast any time from mid October, but you will have some warm days in between until December. A Chilly December, January and February with snow on the mountain tops. The winter months give you breathtaking views from the water.
A peacefulness settles over Tivat during the winter with Christmas cheer a plenty. There are Christmas markets and decorative lights adding to the charm, it has its own beauty this time of year and is most certainly still worth a visit.
Where to Stay in Tivat
In the summer months you will most likely want to swim, so best to try stay close to the waters edge. The best place for this is in KraΕ‘iΔi, opposite the Bay but still part of the Tivat Municipality. KraΕ‘iΔi is fast becoming a stretch of Tivat for the invested, ever so slowly becoming a millionaire’s mile…
If you enjoy the restaurant vibe more then the Tivat port and central areas are the spots to be. Accommodation in the port is expensive but if your budget allows then the Regent Hotel is a clear winner.
If you looking at budget accommodation then the town center is best. Close enough to walk to the port and restaurants and near the center of town, if you choose wisely. I can from personal experience recommend Ioannis Apartments – clean, and an easy walk to the bus stop, port and town, and the host is a lovely lady who is very welcoming.
Transport
Tivat is large but small…. Depending on what you want to do in Tivat, this will depend on how and with what you can get around.
If you looking to stay a few days at the port then you can basically walk every where. The main center of town is just behind the Ports Pine Promenade.
If you are travelling a little out of town or going shopping at the larger supermarkets then I suggest getting a car rental. Book early as cars are limited, especially during season. Driving is on the right side of the road.
If you looking to use Tivat as a base and experience only the Boka bay coast from there, then you are in luck. The local bus takes you all along the coast of Boka bay from Tivat center to Hertzog Novi, Krasici, Kotor to Perast and more… It is a scenic coastal drive to most places. Some bus routes have a waiting time so you would need to check the times. If you don’t understand the time table, ask the friendly locals at the bus stops or the bus drivers.
If all else fails there are taxis all around …
What to DO and See in Tivat
Exploring Tivat by foot is great, you can see the port and the bay if you stay nearby, or you can take the local bus to be on the other side of town. Being based in Tivat is great, it is the center point of Boka bay and gives you easy access to other areas of Montenegro.
Visit the Yacht club for drinks or lunch, there is a pool there for lounging and they have music in the evenings.
Restaurants and pubs are all along the Ports Pine promenade, with great views and a lively atmosphere. You might even be surprised with a live show or entertainment, as this area is one of Tivats gathering hubs.
There are some great tours and boat trips, you will find many of these advertised at the port.
Port of Montenegro
The Port of Montenegro takes centre stage in Tivat. It has transformed what was once a small fisherman’s village into a giant player of super yachts on the coast.
Visit the ports exclusive boutiques or venture into the town center to visit the local shops. The superyachts are anchored along the promenade, here you will find exclusive boutique stores on the waters edge. Everyone from young and old, rich or poor.
Beyond the Port
The shores of Tivat are dotted with little fisher boats all along its coastline. Reminiscent of the little fisherman’s village that once was and still dances in the shadows. Stone houses playing to the tunes of this romance. With families eating el fresco, diving into the warm clear blue waters on hot summer days. A real life fairytale come to life and not many know its secrets.
With the fisherman still going about their ‘catch of the day’ and the traditional meals still being served under the olive, fig and pomegranate trees that dot the landscape like weeds.
A new playground for the super wealthy from all over the world and travelers seeking new shores. With its tax free fuel for the yachts and the beautiful rustic coastline and its azure blue waters, most certainly puts Tivat on the map.
The Port also boasts a new center, Boka Bay Place, coming soon! A great development at the port for shopping and entertainment – all about lifestyle.
The happy and busy locals rush about their summer daily chores in the restaurants. No matter who you are, everyone is enjoying where they are in this beautiful Tivat, on this beautiful stretch of coast.
Living in Tivat is great all year round. In the summer you have fun, sun and vibe. In the winter you get to reflect on the busy season just gone by. Tivat has a different beauty and purpose in the winter. An amazing place to be no matter what the season, it is worth the journey. At the end of the day its ‘All about Tivat’.
