All you need to know to get your documents ready and to submit them for your tourist/short stay visa to Montenegro.
This is not a difficult visa to get – just make sure your documents are correct.
- Your continuous stay / total duration of consecutive stays may not exceed 90 days in a 6 month period. Counted from the date of your first entry.
- The validity period of a Visa C for multiple entries is up to one year.
- Exceptionally, you can request for a longer period, five years max. This is in exceptional situations and reviewed case by case.
- A group can apply for a short stay visa. And can be affixed to a group passport. Seen as a collective visa and can’t exceed 30 days.
Many tourists to Montenegro do not realise that once they land in Montenegro they need to pay tourist tax within 24 hours of their arrival. Most booking accommodations does this on your behalf, but just make sure they have. You need the proof of this when you exit Montenegro again at the airport else you might get fined. If you move in between towns, example from Tivat to Budva, you need to apply again in Budva. This applies for the first 30 days.

Some Countries citizens do not need a Visa to enter Montenegro . See below if you are one of the lucky ones….
Countries not needing a visa to enter Montenegro
1. Visa Application Form
Complete in full and sign.
Download the Montenegrin visa form and fill it in. If you have had previous visas, fill this section in on the application form. It strengthens your case.
2. Passport Photo
The requirements for the photo:
- size: 45 mm in height and 35 mm in width.
- in color with plain background
- look straight into the camera
- No glasses, head covering, scarf etc.
3. Passport & Copy
You need to take your original passport/valid travel document with. You need to make a copy of the main page of your passport to submit. Your passport/valid travel document needs to exceed the duration of your visa stay by three months.
4. Itinerary of your Journey
Its important to add a 1 page itinerary of your trip. Stating who you are traveling with, flight numbers and dates, booked accommodation, travel means, and travel dates between areas. A summary of all your bookings. Also seen as proof of the purpose of stay in Montenegro.
5. Flights/ transport into & out of Montenegro
A printed copy of your transport into Montenegro.
- Your flight tickets
- or bus/taxi/or other transportation ticket
- or private car, drivers license needed. And if you have proof of ownership of vehicle, add a copy of this.
Proof of the means of travel and intention to return into the state where you come from or into a third country/state.
6. Proof of Accommodation
Proof of Accommodation for the entire time you are in Montenegro. Show bookings for all the dates that you are applying for.
A receipt from a tourist arrangement, hotel or other type of accommodation reservation.
7. Letter from Company, School or Own business
You need a letter from the Company you work for, or school/educational facility you are attending. If you have your own business you need to have a letter written on your business letterhead.
These letters need to state “permission granted for leave of period of intended visit”. This is just to ensure that you are planning to return to your country of residence.
8. Letter of Invitation
This is for proof of the purpose of stay in Montenegro if you have been invited. A letter of guarantee by a physical person or letter of invitation by a legal entity, state authority in Montenegro or organizer of an international conference or event. This is needed together with itinerary if you are invited or staying with someone you know.
If you are staying with a friend or family member you will need a letter from them – Letter of Invitation. Translate the letter of invitation into Montenegrin and stamp by a notary.
9. Means of Support
You need to prove means for sustenance during your stay in Montenegro or for travel into a third state. This can be done with cash, a bank account, travelerβs checks, credit cards etc.
You need a 3 month stamped bank statement from your bank showing you have means to support yourself for your intended stay. If you have your own business, you need to add 3 month bank statement for this as well.
If you are being sponsored financially by a person or company, submit a letter from them. For a personal sponsor you would need to add their bank statement.
10. Proof of Health Insurance
You need to have travelling health insurance for the duration of your stay. Most medical aids offer this service with your insurance, normally for a 3 month period. If you do not have medical insurance or it is not sufficient you need to apply for it.
This letter of medical cover must be included n your application.
11. Visa Application fee
Paid at the embassy or into their bank account if you are using a courier for application. You should contact the embassy to find out the latest fee for submission as this changes regularly and fluctuates with exchange rates. You should ask for receipt if paid in cash. Receipt to be admitted with application.
12. Appointment for Visa Submission
Make an appointment at your closest Montenegrin embassy/consulate.
Some countries might not have a Montenegrin embassy/consulate. Another embassy will then accept the application on their behalf. For eg. Serbia Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa.
