The Work Permit for Spain is also referred to as the Self-Employment Work Visa.
This visa is probably the most difficult Visa type to apply for, so everyone kept telling us. Lots of luck, sweat and tears and still you might not be successful.
First off: Make sure this is the correct visa type for you. Once you have handed it in, it is to late for any turnaround… if you apply for this visa type and are not successful you need to take into account that it will then be more difficult to apply for the non-lucrative visa.
If you are satisfied this one is for you:
Start at least 6 months before you are ready to jet off to your new destination, as getting all the documents together takes time. Each consulate may require something extra as they always like to throw a spanner in the works.
Complete Phase 1 whilst you apply for Phase 2 personal documents.
PHASE 1:
DOCUMENTS YOU WILL NEED FOR PHASE 1:
- Ex – 07 Form (need 2 so in duplicate, fill in full, print and sign).
- Complete the form to pay the fees. (Modelo 790.52)

- Make an Appointment at the consulate in your area.
- Hand in your documents in person at the consulate, we had to send us via email as well. Consulate insisted we email all our documents in 1 pdf file. Pay your fee.
- You will need to be patient, this step takes anything from 3 months wait and might not be successful. You can request a review of your business plan if denied BUT this takes time and money.

Business Plan in Detail
It is important that your business plan is handed in ONLY IN SPANISH – else you would need to officially translate it and this can be costly. Use 2 or 3 Google Translate programs or ask a Spanish friend.
4. Documents that proves respective training/ experience
These documents are important as an appendix to your business plan. It is proof that you are qualified and capable to accomplich your business activity.
These documents are anything from dance certificates, to University degrees to certificates of training in a field.
How to get your Education Verified and ready for your visa
Simple steps but time consuming can take anything from 2 weeks to a few months.
5. Proof of sufficient economic funds:
- This must be inline with your business plan. Make sure your this amount reflects with what is stated in your plan and include your personal costs.
- You must prove that you will be able to finance your new business.
- Your finances must prove that you can provide for your personal needs (rent, health care etc.)
- Prove any recurring passive income you have eg: share portfolio, rental income to strengthen your application.
- Supply a 6 month bank statement with sufficient savings, stamped by your bank, in your full name, and TRANSLATED into Spanish.
So in short this must be inline with BOTH your business plan and residence for a year in Spain, make sure you show enough to cover your business plan and your personal needs – else you will be Denied.
6. Licence of Activity
To register a business in the area you widh to operate in. You would need a Gestor /Accountant or Attorney to assist with this. This one is the bugger I was mentioning. Near impossible and some choose not to hand this in with application.
7. POLICE CLEARANCE
- You need to apply at the Police station in your area for this document.
- It then needs to be apostilled for legalisation. (DIRCO)
- It also needs to be translated by an official translator.
- The translation needs to be legalised by the high court in Cape Town.
8. Appointment at the consulate in your area
- Make your appointment at the consulate when your business plan is complete.
- Go through the checklist below to make sure you are ready for your appointment.
